GTA 6 Collector’s Box Costs $400, But You Still Have to Buy the Game

GTA 6: Rockstar’s $399.99 Vice City Collection includes 11 physical collectibles, but adding the actual game pushes the total close to $500.

For $399.99, Grand Theft Auto fans can preorder Oakley sunglasses, a manatee shot glass, and a gator figure with a hidden compartment. The one thing they will not receive is GTA 6 itself. Rockstar’s Goodtime State Vice City Collection contains 11 physical collectibles but no game disc or download code.

Rockstar opened preorders on September 24, with the collection scheduled to arrive on November 19, 2026. That coincides with GTA 6’s launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. PC players will have to wait for a separately announced release.

The price becomes harder to ignore when the actual game enters the equation. GTA 6’s standard edition costs $79.99 in the US, bringing the combined subtotal to $479.98 before taxes and shipping. Rockstar also excludes the collector’s box from free shipping.

For dedicated franchise collectors, the merchandise offers something beyond the game. For everyone else, it raises a straightforward question about value.

Why GTA 6 Fans Are Questioning the $400 Price

Selling a $400 collector’s box without the game has sparked criticism among players who expect expensive editions to include the software. Some fans argue that Rockstar should include a copy at this price. A commenter in Reddit’s r/TwoBestFriendsPlay community captured that frustration with a simple question: “Like, why not just throw it in?” Yet despite the criticism, keeping the game separate offers some practical advantages.

A software-free package avoids the need for separate PlayStation and Xbox versions. It also allows buyers with digital consoles to purchase the same collectibles without receiving an unwanted disc.

Rockstar has not publicly explained why it separated the game from this particular collection.

Rockstar Has Sold Game-Free Collector’s Boxes Before

Rockstar followed a similar strategy in 2018 with Red Dead Redemption 2. Its $99.99 Collector’s Box contained physical merchandise but excluded the game.

Blizzard also sold a Diablo IV Limited Collector’s Box for $96.66 in 2023 without including the software.

The GTA 6 collection costs roughly four times as much as Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2 box. Their contents differ significantly, but the comparison highlights the much higher price of Rockstar’s latest offering.

For publishers, separating merchandise from software creates opportunities to sell premium accessories without tying them to a particular game edition.

What Buyers Actually Get for $399.99

Rather than focusing entirely on traditional gaming collectibles, Rockstar has partnered with recognizable lifestyle brands.

Oakley Frogskins sunglasses and a New Era snapback cap headline the package. Buyers also receive a Leonida Keys crossbody bag and a 6-inch Macca the Gator figure with a storage compartment in its base.

Other items include a magnetic mirror, a Chunkee the Manatee shot glass, a decorative spoon, a razor-blade-shaped keychain, enamel pins, stickers, and a souvenir poster featuring Leonida’s map.

These accessories target dedicated GTA collectors and fans of Vice City’s fictional culture. Rockstar has not disclosed individual prices for the items, making their combined retail value difficult to assess.

The collection remains advertised for preorder on Rockstar’s store as of October 8, 2026. No official sales figures have been released, so online complaints cannot establish whether demand has suffered.

Rockstar is treating GTA 6 as more than a software release. The company is building a separate premium merchandise business around the franchise, selling branded accessories at prices that far exceed the cost of the game. The $400 collector’s box shows just how much commercial value Rockstar believes the Grand Theft Auto name can command, even when the product being sold contains no game at all.
