Sony Announces ¥55,000 Midnight Black PS5 Digital Edition Locked to Japanese Accounts

PS5 Digital Edition Sony’s $350 black PS5 arrives on the same day as GTA 6, but its Japanese account requirement puts it out of reach for most overseas players.

US buyers now face a $599.99 recommended price for the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition. On November 19, Sony will release a Midnight Black version in Japan for ¥55,000, approximately $350 including Japanese consumption tax. The price difference is substantial, but importing the cheaper model will not let overseas players use their existing PlayStation accounts.

Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Asia calls the new console the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black (Console Language: Japanese Only). It ships with a matching black DualSense controller and an 825GB SSD. Japanese retailers begin taking preorders on October 20.

The release date is especially notable. Grand Theft Auto VI is also scheduled for November 19, putting Sony’s new color option on shelves alongside one of 2026’s most anticipated games. Sony is also releasing a matching disc drive that day.

Why the Japanese Account Lock Matters

Sony first introduced its ¥55,000 Japanese language PS5 Digital Edition in November 2025. The Midnight Black version extends that existing range rather than introducing a fresh discount.

The price gap is clear within Japan itself. The regular multilingual PS5 Digital Edition carries a ¥89,980 recommended price, compared with ¥55,000 for the restricted model.

The cheaper console only accepts PlayStation accounts registered to Japan and uses Japanese for its system menus. That has practical consequences. Someone importing the console to the US cannot simply sign in with an American account. An English speaking resident in Tokyo with a European account faces the same problem, including access to purchases tied to that account.

Nintendo uses a similar approach with its cheaper Japanese language Switch 2. Offering local pricing behind language and account barriers also reduces opportunities to resell discounted stock overseas, particularly when the weak yen widens international price gaps.

What Buyers Get With the Midnight Black PS5

Under the new casing, the hardware is identical to the slim PS5 Digital Edition Sony already sells in Japan.

Sony includes a matching Midnight Black DualSense controller and USB cable in the box, giving Japanese buyers a coordinated setup without purchasing additional accessories.

Buyers with physical game libraries can add the Midnight Black disc drive for ¥11,980, roughly $76 including tax. It launches on November 19 and supports PS5 and compatible PS4 game discs, alongside 4K movie discs. Initial pairing requires an internet connection, while Sony sells the vertical stand separately.

Overseas Buyers Still Pay More for the Same Look

Outside Japan, assembling a comparable Midnight Black setup is considerably more expensive.

At US recommended prices, a $599.99 PS5 Digital Edition, $54.99 official console covers, and a $74.99 Midnight Black DualSense total approximately $730 before sales tax. Buyers also end up with the original white controller as an extra.

The announcement reopened another frustration among PlayStation owners, particularly those waiting for more official customization options for the PS5 Pro.

In a discussion on Reddit’s r/PS5 community, one player wrote:

“I’m still waiting for Sony to release PS5 Pro plates.”

Sony already sells official Midnight Black covers for the slim PS5, but it has not announced a matching unrestricted black console package for overseas markets or Midnight Black covers for the PS5 Pro.
